Time and Settings Setup Instructions

- 1. Set the label for either Project or Client Work
- Utilize "Client" to track time for
billing needs.
- Utilize "Project" label when time tracking needs are
for internal business operations and costs.
- This changes the labels used. Does not impact application performance.
- 2. Set company name
- Company name displays on reports only. Does not impact performance.
- 3. Use a unique employee ID or name.
- Must be unique for use in
the same database.
- Employee ID is the identifier for
recording records.
- If sharing the same database, the employee
ID can be changed on different computers to get personal time keeping records.
- 4. Set time capture in minutes.
- Best to set at frequency of a work unit.
- A work unit is either at billable frequency or typical amount of time to complete a recorded task.
- 5. Set the number of days to keep records.
- Records are deleted only after
is used.
- Use delete feature if performance becomes sluggish.
- For optimal performance, compact the database after deleting records.
- 6. Create database or open existing shared database file.
- Select the folder button to either create or open an existing database.
- If sharing an existing database file select no.
- If sharing an existing database file it is necessary to know the database
file location.
- There are two types of ways of knowing the location of a shared file.
- Relative reference
- Uses a drive letter as a short cut to a network or local drive. Example C:\pathname\file.qg1 or D:\setup.exe
- Absolute reference
- Uses a path name that is named without the letter drives and is exact. Example \\computername\pathname\file.qg1
- Each computer can have a different relative reference. This means the location of the database file can be different from different computers. Both relative and absolute reference work for Time Fencer 1.1.
- Time Fencer 1.1 uses a database file with a file extension of .QG1. Use search with *.QG1 if
you are having difficulty locating the file.
- 7. Installation key for use beyond 30 day trial
- quickgrowth offers Time Fencer for a free trial use of 30 days, after which the software will not work
without a license key.
- See quickgrowth's website for
pricing of our license agreements.
- Back up database file
- Encourage backing up (copying the database file normally TimeFencer.QG1) the database onto either CD or a server that has back up tapes for businesses that require keeping a history of time tracked activity after its use in accounting or analysis
purposes.
- There are no automated utilities at the time of this writing for database backup for Time Fencer 1.1.
- Database file limitations
- Time Fencer's database can support up to 20 users of 1 database file. Up to 255 are possible but at a significant
degradation of service
- Time Fencer's database file can not get any bigger then 2 gigabytes.
